I’ve been there myself, and I can honestly say it’s one of the most picturesque and peaceful places I’ve visited in my home country — and that’s saying something. Surrounded by red cliffs and shaped like a horseshoe, this small sandy cove feels like a secret.

Where Is Bolata Beach?

Bolata Beach is located on the Northern Black Sea coast, about 6 km north of Cape Kaliakra, 15 km from the town of Kavarna, and 70 kilometers from Varna Airport. It’s part of the Kaliakra Nature Reserve, known for its biodiversity and cliffside views.

How to Get to Bolata Beach

🚗 By Car

Driving is the easiest and most flexible way to get there. I visited by car and recommend renting one if you’re traveling the coast. Use a reputable provider with clear terms and local support.

• From Kavarna: 20 minutes
• From Varna: About 1.5 hours
• From Balchik: Around 50 minutes
• Arriving at Sofia Airport is also an option. Bolata is 520 kilometers away from Sofia. Veliko Tarnovo is a must-stop along the way.

Why spend a few days in Sofia before heading to the Black Sea Coast?

🅿️ Free parking is available just above the beach. In summer, it can fill up by midday.

🚌 By Public Transport

There’s no direct public transport to Bolata Beach. The nearest you can get is Kavarna, and from there, you’d need to take a taxi or cycle.

🚶 By Foot or Bike

You can hike or bike from Cape Kaliakra, but it’s a rough, hot path in summer. Bring water, sun protection, and a fully charged phone.

When to Visit

• Best months: Late May to early September
• Best time of day: Mornings (before 11 AM) and late afternoons (after 4 PM)

Avoid midday in peak season — it gets busy, and shade is limited.

Facilities at Bolata Beach

Bolata is part of a protected nature reserve, so facilities are minimal:

• No umbrellas or sunbeds
• No lifeguards

Bring everything you need: water, food, shade, and cash.

Swimming & Safety

The bay’s shape keeps the water calm and shallow, so it’s safe for kids and less confident swimmers. That said, there are no lifeguards, so swim responsibly.

Is Bolata Beach Clean?

Yes, most of the time. I visited in early June and found the beach clean and peaceful. You might see some seaweed or driftwood, especially after storms, but nothing off-putting.

Wildlife & Nature

Because it’s within the Kaliakra Nature Reserve, this area is also a great spot for:

• Birdwatching (especially herons and cormorants)
• Wildflowers in spring
• Marine life in tide pools

You might also spot bats on the cliffs at dusk.

Can You Camp at Bolata Beach?

Officially, camping is not allowed. People still do it, but it’s not legal and not always safe.

I don’t recommend staying overnight here. Instead, stay in Kavarna or Balchik and visit Bolata as a day trip.

Pomorie, known for its healing mud and an ancient Thracian tomb, offers a unique blend of history and wellness. 

Take a few days to discover the southern coast as well. Visit the charming town of Sozopol, relax at Lozenets Beach, and soak up the serenity at Silistar Beach. Continue to Sinemorets, where the Veleka River meets the Black Sea, creating a stunning landscape. For nature lovers, a trip to Strandzha Natural Park offers diverse wildlife and a glimpse into Bulgaria’s more rural, timeless villages.
