Itinerary

  1. Day1
    Arrival in Sofia

Your guide will meet you at the airport and will take you to your hotel. Depending on your time of arrival you might get a chance to explore the centre of Sofia – the buzzing capital of Bulgaria.

  2. Day2
    Sofia - Belogradchik

Today you will travel north through the Balkan Mountains and the deeply cut Iskar Gorge. A stop at a small monastery will give you a chance to feel the atmosphere of this natural way and the life that people here have lead for centuries. The goal for the day is Belogradchik – a small town in the foothills of the mountains famous for its unique red rocks formations and the fortress that was build using the natural defense of the landscape. You will explore the place and learn more about it from your guide while trying to separate the legends from the history. Belogradchik is also where you will stay overnight.

  3. Day3
    Belogradchik - Veliko Tarnovo

Today you will leave the misty mountains and will travel through the Danube river valley towards the places where the two meet again. In a region dominated by limestone the erosion caused by the running water and the weather have formed amazing natural phenomenons. You will visit the Devetashka Cave and learn about its eventful past. It is truly amazing and unlike anything you’ve seen before. After the visit to the cave it is time for a refreshing walk in the lush green forests surrounding the Krushuna Waterfalls – the water there washes away the chalk from the rocks giving it a deep green colour which looks mystical and unreal. In the late afternoon you will arrive at the medieval capital of Veliko Tarnovo where you will have the chance to explore the narrow steep streets and the clifftop fortress of Tsarevets.

  4. Day4
    Veliko Tarnovo - Plovdiv

After breakfast you will head south crossing once again the Balkan Mountains and leaving the north part of the country behind. You will stop at Shipka Peak and will see how this majestic mountain separates Bulgaria in two. Once you reach the Thracian Valley to the south you will head to Plovdiv which is the end point of today’s travel. The ancient city is built on seven granite hills and its Old Town is famous for the cobbled streets and the Bulgarian Revival style architecture. A walk around is an amazing experience and you will have plenty of time to do it at your own pace and discover what our ancestors have left behind.

  5. Day5
    Plovdiv - Devin

Once again leaving the lowlands behind you will head south through the winding roads of the Rhodope Mountains to the Wonderful Bridges. Hidden deep in the mountain these rock arches give you an unique opportunity to marvel at the forces of nature that have created them over millions of years. On the way to the bridges you will visit the Bachkovo Monastery and have a glimpse of one of the most sacred orthodox places in Bulgaria. You will continue your way through the mountains reaching the SPA resort of Devin famous for its mineral springs. A relaxed afternoon in the pool is all you need at the end of this day.

  6. Day6
    Devin - Melnik

In the morning you will get even deeper in the mountains going through the Trigrad Gorge and entering the Devil’s Throat cave. Once there it is not hard to imagine why it bears this name. The constant roar of the water inside makes you feel like you’re inside a mythical creature. Later travelling west through the pine forests of the Rhodope mountains and the high passes of Pirin mountains you will reach the smallest town in Bulgaria called Melnik. Famous for its local wine Melnik is situated in an unique area surrounded by earth pyramids formed by the sun and the wind and glowing vibrantly in the colours of the setting sun. A walk around the pyramids and a glass of wine is all you need to finish off another amazing day.

  7. Day7
    Melnik - Sofia

The penultimate day of the tour will take you back to Sofia travelling back north and admiring the snow capped slopes of Pirin and Rila mountains. A visit to the famous Rila monastery is on the list and in the afternoon you will get the chance to explore Sofia. A farewell dinner will bring the tour to an end.
