Bulgaria is a country with rich history and beautiful countryside. On this week long tour you will discover the treasures of Sofia, Plovdiv and Veliko Tarnovo and the surrounding areas as well as the town museum of Koprivshtitsa while your guide helps you learn more about the past and present of these ancient lands.
The tour begins in Sofia where your guide will meet you at the airport. You will be transferred to a centrally located hotel which will be your home for the next two nights. Depending on the time of your arrival you might get a chance to explore your surroundings before dinner. Your guide will happily advise you on places to see and eat.
The next day starts with a walking tour of Sofia after breakfast. The city has a lot to show and your guided tour will take you to places like the ruins of Roman Serdica, St. George – the oldest functioning church in Europe, the National Theatre and of course the St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral. After lunch it’s time to take to the countryside and travel south to Rila Monastery in the heart of the mountains which is also a UNESCO Heritage Site. In the late afternoon you will return to Sofia in time for dinner.
On day three you will leave Sofia to travel north of the Balkan Mountains to the medieval capital Veliko Tarnovo. On the way you will stop at the Glozhene Monastery perched on a clifftop forming a natural fortress. After reaching Veliko Tarnovo it is time for lunch and to check in at the hotel. In the afternoon you will explore the sights of the town on a guided walking tour including visits to the Tsarevets Fortress, the famous Samovodska Market Street and the Holy Forty Martyrs church. The day finishes with a dinner in a local restaurant and a well deserved rest.
The next day start with a journey south across the Balkan Mountains after breakfast. In the late morning you will visit the Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak – a UNESCO heritage site and the most famous one of the hundreds of tombs in the area known as the Valley of the Thracian Kings. It is also the valley of the roses as you will discover in the local Rose museum. After lunch you will head west through the valley and towards the historic town of Koprivshtitsa where you will have the rest of the day free to relax in a place where the time has stopped more than a hundred years ago. You will meet again for dinner and to share your discoveries.
Day five starts with a guided walking tour around the cobbled streets of Koprivshtitsa, admiring the lavish houses and the quiet gardens while learning more about the turbulent past of this historical place. After lunch you will head to Plovdiv and its old town full of secrets and small streets. Before dinner you will get a chance to have a glimpse of what the town has to offer and if you’re lucky there might even be an event in the two thousand years old theatre.
The next day begins with a guided walking tour of Plovdiv Old Town visiting the Ancient Theatre, the Ethnographic Museum, the Roman Stadium and discovering the importance of this place though the ages. After lunch you will head south towards the Rhodope Mountains visiting the 11 century Bachkovo Monastery and the Assenova Fortress situated on a cliff top and guarding the medieval road through the mountains. You will return to Plovdiv before dinner for your second night in this amazing town.
Day seven takes you back to Sofia after breakfast. On the way you will visit the National History Museum and the Boyana Church – a UNESCO Heritage Site both situated in the foothills of Vitosha Mountain. After lunch and hotel check in you will have some free time to explore Sofia, buy souvenirs, send postcards or just have a coffee in one of the many wonderful cafes in the centre. You will meet your guide again for a farewell dinner and sharing experiences of the tour.
On the last day you will be transferred to the airport after breakfast and according to your flight schedule.
